Central Croatia

Colorful open markets, monumental Austrian architecture, and the medieval old towns full of stories about knights and witches – the first association is usually Zagreb. But, this region is more than Croatia’s capital. Baroque castles, rustic cuisine, thermal waters, and many still undiscovered sites make Central Croatia a true gem.

The preferable time to visit is all year round. Thanks to the rivers of Sava and Drava, small local towns are spared from the strong summer heat making them great for day trips. Visit the archeological site in Krapina, dreamy castle Trakoscan, or taste strukli with the glass of grasevina overlooking the green hills, and get the full insight into the continental part of Croatia. When the winter comes try hiking or skiing down the slopes of Sljeme, and blend in among locals while tasting homemade beans with sausage.

Although relatively small, central Croatia cherishes many crafts which are part of its rich tangible cultural heritage. Gingerbread crafts produce licitar hearts – colorful and authentic souvenirs for loved ones. The small town of Lepoglava is well known for its lace, while rural areas of Hrvatsko zagorje cherish hand-made wooden toys that kids love to play with. There is, of course, much more, but we will let you discover it on your own.
